Adam Ruins Weddings - Blog 4

One myth about weddings is that the dress, ceremony, cake, and tradition all symbolizes true love. These things actually all symbolize money and the popular culture that industry greed capitalizes on. Another wedding myth is that the white of the wedding dress, cake,  and other accessories symbolize purity or that the couple are virgins. This actually was popularized by Queen Victoria as a show of wealth, as white fabric would only be worn once and white sugar was so expensive. A third myth is that expensive ordeals like weddings are thought to be a bonding experience to bring the bride and groom closer together to for a better off marriage. While that is a myth, the truth is quite the opposite. Researchers at Emory University found that the more you spend on your wedding, the more likely you are to end in divorce. Knowing the truth behind the scam of the wedding industry is important because if you evade the countless advertisers pushing for consumerism and a show of wealth, you'll be able to see the significance behind jumping the broom. That significance is that people in relationships should focus on love as the driving force behind their wedding day, as it will likely make them more happy and a better off in their relationship certified by joint taxes.

  1. I really love the last sentence in your post-- it's very true! And you are definitely right when you say that the wedding business is a scam. The mark-ups vendors put on their items when they see "wedding" is outrageous. I agree with you that marriage should be about love, not the materialistic flash that marketers want brides and grooms to purchase.
