Slut Shaming in Action - Blog 4

One of the news story's about the Duke University pornstar that I felt was interesting was The Young Turks. This news's coverage of the story seems to be focused on it's aspect of bullying. One other news source that I felt had a contrary direction and view for the news story was CNN. I believe they wrote this story to be focused on how this is a result of sexuality in our culture. While these two perspectives have different focal points, I believe that they both were attempting to make good of the situation. The Young Turks did this by emphasizing that porn empowered and fulfilled the woman. They made it clear how they thought that even being a pornstar in the public light shouldn't diminish safety and cause danger to the woman. CNN show's their positive attitude towards the woman's choice of being a pornstar by the use of a professional psychologist as a guest to iron out issues surrounding society's uproar of this woman's career choice. The clinical psychologist, Michelle Golland, reinforces a positive attitude by stating that if she had any other job, it could not be a story, and that the explicity of this situation is what draws attention and sparks debate. Both these news sources rely on the fundamental thought the the bitter, jealous, irrational "slut-shaming" attitude is needless and is a result of society's attitude towards public explicity.

  1. I also wrote about The Young Turks. I felt that their point of view was negative, and I like that you said it was like bullying. All of the videos also talked about how this is something that makes the duke student feel empowered.

    1. I can understand why you though it was negative. The Turks news did emphasize their concern this effecting more young college students extensively, possibly more so than their focus on empowering women.
